Vic: Morale low after police pay decision, union
Victoria's police union says morale is low in the middle ranks of the state's police
force after a ruling denying compensation for higher workloads.
The Police Association had argued that senior sergeants are now doing work formerly
done by inspectors and they should be likewise compensated.
But the Australian Industrial Relations Commission's ruled the officers are not entitled
to any extra allowances and there are insufficient funds available to pay for them.
Police Association assistant Victorian secretary BRUCE MCKENZIE says the force's senior
sergeants hold the view they have greater responsibility and should be paid for that.
Inspector MCKENZIE says senior sergeants who had previously completed their extra work
in their own time would now be encouraged to claim for overtime.
Comment's being being sought from Victoria Police.
