Fed: Opposition class for detainees to be charged over riots

The federal opposition has called for asylum seekers involved in a weekend riot atthe Curtin immigration detention centre to be charged.

Immigration spokeswoman JULIA GILLARD has also urged detainees to immediately surrenderweapons and stop their protest at the centre in Western Australia's far north.

Detainees are continuing a stand-off with authorities in the main compound of the centre, three days after a riot by inmates.

Ms GILLARD says those who have committed criminal acts should be charged.

She says Australian Federal Police will investigate the incident and the outcome shouldbe made public so it's clear what happened and who was responsible.

She says whatever grievances asylum seekers hold, violence is not the answer.
